The Deep Blue Sea

On a very dark day in the 1950s, pushed to the edge by guilt and shame, Hester Collyer (Rachel Weisz) has decided to take her own life, gulping pills and turning on the gas in her apartment. Failing her suicide attempt thanks to attentive neighbors, Hester is left with the aftermath of her grave decision, an act of self-sacrifice that disturbs her alcoholic lover, Freddie Page (Tom Hiddleston), bringing their passionate yet tempestuous union to a close. Shell-shocked, Hester’s life is complicated further by the return of William (Simon Russell Beale), the stale but dependable husband she left to pursue intensity with Freddie, who’s concerned about his adulterous wife, still trying to process their abrupt marital divide. Facing a torrent of feelings on an especially vulnerable day, Hester labors futilely to reassemble what once passed for domestic peace, finding herself hopelessly alone with her poor choices.
